David Frank Homes is a family owned and operated business since 1947. David Radford's grandfather, Byron Lewis Radford (BL), started the family construction business building homes in Roanoke after moving his family of nine from the coal fields of West Virginia. He built, among other projects, one of Roanoke County's first subdivisions, Blue Hills Addition, on land that is now in Roanoke City. His son, Frank joined the business after graduation from Virginia Tech in 1958, and took over the operations six years later. During the 60's and 70's Frank was successful in growing the family business into subdivision development which includes neighborhoods of Cherry Hill, Montclair Estates, Maywood and a 20 home subdivision on "Easy Street" in Salem. He also created and built several apartment communities starting with the Carlton Scott complex in Blacksburg, Normany Knoll, Ravenswood and Shenandoah Manor in Roanoke, and The Forest in Lynchburg.
In 1988, Frank's son David, after a successful career of his own in textile manufacturing, is carrying the family business into its third generation along with his mother, Mary Elizabeth. Among the communities Frank & David have created for the Roanoke Valley include The Glen, Glen Ivy, Heather Park, South Jefferson Place, Woodhaven Office Park, Glen Laurel Place, Cresthill Commons, Glen Meadow, South Mountain Village, McVitty Forest and Mason's Crest. Along with developer M&F Homes, DFH is currently building homes at Slate Creek Commons in Christiansburg, Va.
Frank & David believe in giving back to the community. In 2004 they donated sixty acres of open land to the National Park Service for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Scenic Virginia praised the Radfords for "collaborating to preserve the scenic viewshed along 60 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke County designated by Scenic America as a Last Chance Landscape". Frank & his wife Mary Elizabeth have also made several donations of land to Roanoke County, including, the land for the Roanoke County Library Headquarters building, land near Cresthill Commons for the Garst Mill Greenway, Land near McVitty Forest for a new greenway, and has proposed donating a park along McVitty Road for a greenway header park.
